The Inner-City Emergency Response Team (IN-C.E.R.T.) is a emergency response team that uses emergency preparedness programs sponsored by the United States Military, The Department of Transportation, The National Fire Protection Association, The United search and Rescue Association, The American red Cross, the American Heart Foundation and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to assist in times of natural and man made disaster.
The Community Emergency Response Team (C.E.R.T. concept was originally developed and implemented by the Los Angeles Fire Department in 1985. The need was recognized following a series of earthquakes in both the U.S. and Mexico that left hundreds dead, injured, and without emergency services. By 1993, thousands of residents had been trained in the United States and Canada. The C.E.R.T. program nationwide is supported and assisted by FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute (EMI) in Emmetsburg, Maryland.
The Inner-City Emergency Response Team became operational in 2005 during Hurricane Rita. Inner-City Community Emergency Response Team, a non-profit organization, is focused on strengthening the community through hands on preparation, education, and training to handle future natural disasters, as well as day to day community issues.
IN-C.E.R.T. is based on the federally funded disaster preparedness program CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). IN-C.E.R.T. presently operates in four states and also conducts national trainings.
The basic training of IN-C.E.R.T. is an eight-week C.E.R.T. training program that educates people on how to keep themselves and their families and neighbors safe in emergencies. The training teaches disaster skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue. The difference between C.E.R.T. and IN-C.E.R.T., C.E.R.T is the training and IN-C.E.R.T is the team.
